Motivating Staff

“Why won’t my staff do what I want them to do?”

This is a story I hear frequently and have often felt it myself?  These sentiments are usually expressed with intense feelings of frustration, anger and disappointment… this is energy draining and ultimately leads to burnout.

Motivation is a Latin word meaning “ to move”… I am sure you will agree that some people seem capable of moving themselves and others seem to need something like a front end loader or sledge hammer to get them going! (Not you of course!)

We ourselves often feel extremely passionate and committed to our work, business or idea… so why isn’t everyone else?

In my experience there are 3 reasons why people don’t do what we want them to do.

Firstly, they don’t know how

This is essentially a training issue. Ask yourself these questions:

Have I recruited someone with the right skills, knowledge and competency to do the job I need?
If not, what do I need to do in order to bring this person up to speed on these factors?

Secondly, they find that someone or something stops them

This could be a systems problem, a resource problem or a people problem…it is up to you to find out what is blocking their action and do something about it.

Thirdly, they don’t want to!

Now this is the really tricky one as this relates to attitude. What are some things you can do here?

First step is to check your own attitude and “vibe” as a leader and manager. What messages are you sending out unconsciously that may have a demotivating effect on your team?
Secondly, you will need to get to know this person to find out what makes them tick…what do they like? What skills would they like to use? What don’t they like?
Thirdly, ask lots of questions and listen. Listen for meaning and emotion behind their words and see if you can discover what will help them to become interested, engaged and motivated.

So many aspects contribute to motivation in the workplace. It starts with you as a leader and manager, it embodies the “culture” and “climate” of an organization and it’s a continuing process that needs regular attention and action. Ignore it at your peril!
